In May 2008, the Scottish Government launched its drugs strategy for the future. It identifies that the education of children and young people is critical if we are to protect them and be successful in driving down the demand for drugs in Scotland.

In the forthcoming year substance misuse education will develop, primarily but not exclusively, around the Health and Wellbeing outcomes within Curriculum for Excellence.

Nationally, there exists the successful Choices for LifeTM (CFL), which is run by the Scottish Crime and Drug Enforcement Agency (SCDEA) supported by partners including Scottish Government, NHS Health Scotland and Learning Teaching Scotland. The multi media event now attracts 48,000 of Scotland’s primary 7 children at venues across the country. While the intention is not to develop new resources there is a requirement on SCDEA and its partners to work with schools at a local level to extend the reach of the CFL message to pupils in secondary schools and to families.
The change brought about by Curriculum for Excellence offers an opportunity for primary, secondary and tertiary education establishments to consider how to improve the training/support on offer to students.
Please take the time to visit the stand being run by SCDEA.
