Company Profile

Eco-Schools Scotland
The Eco-Schools programme is an international initiative designed to encourage whole-school action for the environment. It is an award scheme that accredits schools that make a commitment to continuously improve their environmental performance. It is also a learning resource that raises awareness of environmental and sustainable development issues throughout activities linked to curriculum subjects and areas.

Involvement by Schools
All schools can be involved in the programme: truly 3-18 years. Involvement in the programme can help schools to:

• Encourage active citizenship
• Improve the school environment
• Reduce litter and waste
• Reduce energy and water use
• Devise efficient ways of travelling to and from school
• Promote healthy lifestyles
• Build strong partnerships with the local community
• Develop global links

Current Activity Levels
The number of schools registered and participating with Eco-Schools as of September 2010 is 3700 and 1,018 schools have been awarded the prestigious Green Flag Award.

This level of activity is, therefore, involving 755,000 pupils and 43,000 teachers in Eco-Schools work throughout Scotland – raising awareness about environmental and sustainable development issues and encouraging young people to take action locally, but think globally.
